What Should I Expect During My Facelift Recovery?

If you are planning to get a facelift, it is important to understand everything about the procedure before you move forward. As with any surgery, having a facelift will require a recovery period. You may be wondering how long the recovery will take and what to expect during that period. Remember, how soon you recover will depend on several factors, including the technique used, your age, and the surgeon’s skill.

First Week of Recovery

The day after the surgery, you can expect to feel quite groggy. Your head will have a large wrapping and most likely a drain as well. You will need someone to help you, as you may feel faint and experience dizziness. You are also likely to experience pain. The drains and wrapping will be removed on the second day to observe the progress. The surgeon will then rewrap the head. If all is well, you are likely to be discharged on the second day.

On the third day, you should be able to walk around, but you will still need to get plenty of rest. You may experience some discomfort, and you will still have some swelling. On day four, you may need to return to the doctor’s office to get the wraps and some stitches removed. For the next eight to 10 days, you should wear a compression garment. The swelling should begin to subside on the fifth day, and on day six, the remaining stitches will be removed.

The Second Week

During the second week of your facelift recovery, you are likely to continue experiencing some tightness around the neck. Some swelling and bruising on the neck and face are still visible, especially around the eyes and ears. You may also feel some tingling, numbness, or burning due to the bruising and swelling. These are normal aftereffects of the surgery. Avoid strenuous activities during the second week, and make sure that you sleep with your head elevated.

Third Week of Recovery

During the third week of the facelift recovery, your appearance will begin to improve. The incisions are more visible during this time. However, some patients experience some tightness and swelling during the third week. This is a normal effect that should improve over time. Many patients can usually go out in public, as the effects of the surgery are less visible. It is important to realize that changes in skin sensation and some residual swelling can continue for months.

After Week Four

After the fourth week, there is marked improvement, and you should be ready to resume most of your daily activities. You can apply makeup without worrying. You can also resume hair styling and coloring. You should, however, talk to the doctor before resuming your exercise or workout routine. After week four, most people will not be able to notice that you have had a facelift.

Experts agree that much of the recovery process is in the patient’s hands. This means that you have a role to play to ensure that your recovery goes smoothly. The surgeon can give you guidelines and instructions, but it’s up to you how the post-operative period goes.
