Structural fat grafting is a common approach that we use to help fight the signs of aging, such as wrinkles, skin and facial droop, sunken eyes, or hollow cheeks. Fat grafting can also be used with other approaches to improve the appearance of your skin and face, making it a great option for many patients.

Who Should Consider Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting can be a great option for patients who have lost some volume in their face and have additional fat reserves elsewhere in their body.

What to Expect from a Fat Grafting Procedure

The actual procedure can be performed as a single procedure, or in combination with a number of other approaches to improve the appearance of your face. Fat grafting is typically conducted under a local anesthetic, meaning that you will not be unconscious for the surgery, but the targeted area will be numbed. The average fat grafting surgery usually takes somewhere around two hours but can vary based on the patient’s need.

Before the procedure is started, your surgeon will review photographs and go over the desired results with you. The targeted areas on the face and areas where fat will be harvested are marked. Typically, fat cells are removed from areas around the thighs or abdomen. Many patients expect that the removal of this fat is done through liposuction, but this process is too damaging to the cells and usually destroys them.

In order to harvest the cells for use in grafting, the tissue must be carefully removed to make sure that it is not damaged. Once it is removed, the cells are gently washed and prepared for injection. Microdroplets of these fat cells are then injected into the areas that are targeted for improvement.

Other Procedures to Consider

Structural fat grafting is a great procedure to help reduce the signs of aging, but you depending on the results that you want, it may be an ideal time to coordinate an additional procedure at the same time. Many of our patients opt for other procedures such as neck lifts, facelifts, or skin resurfacing procedures.

Healing From Fat Grafting

It is important to note that during a fat grafting procedure that you will have at least two treatment areas, the targeted area in your face, and the incision where the fat cells were harvested. The initial swelling from the surgery will often disappear within just a few weeks. As the face is allowed to heal, your results will continue to improve. Many patients see improvements over the course of the healing process.

Patients are often able to resume applying makeup and return to work within a week. At about the same time, your doctor will allow you to resume exercise and your normal life routine.

As with any surgical procedure, there is a possibility that you will have an infection or an adverse reaction to the procedure. If you notice any significant swelling or bleeding, contact your surgical team immediately so they can evaluate your healing process.
