Determining Whether a Facelift is Right for You

Facelift candidates should:

  • Be in good overall health, able to undergo sedation and anesthesia

  • Not suffer from any illnesses that could prevent your face from healing properly after surgery

  • Have some skin elasticity, since Dr. Metzinger will stretch it taut during this procedure for a smoother appearance

  • Not smoke or take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of this surgery, both physically and psychologically

Dr. Metzinger will tell you if you are eligible for this procedure after reviewing your medical history and conducting an exam at your first appointment.

Types of Facelifts

To meet each patient’s unique needs, Dr. Metzinger offers several types of facelifts:

  • Standard: During a standard facelift procedure, Dr. Metzinger will make an incision from temple to temple across the hairline. This may also extend around the bottom of your ear, depending on your needs and preferences. He will then remove any unwanted fat deposits, modify the underlying tissue, tighten the skin, and trim any loose folds before closing the incision.

  • Minimal Access Cranial Suspension (MACS): This is a less invasive technique for smoothing and firming facial skin. Dr. Metzinger will make an incision along the front of both of your ears to tighten the tissue beneath, suspend the skin and tissue so that it is smooth, and remove additional skin before suturing the incisions closed. Patients who undergo MACS facelift surgery typically have less noticeable scars. This procedure can reduce eyelid, sideburn, and jowl sagging.

  • Deep-plane: If you have severe wrinkling or sagging, especially in the nasolabial area between the nose and lips, Dr. Metzinger may recommend a deep-plane facelift. Rather than simply tightening the underlying superficial muscolo-aponeurotic system (SMAS) of tissues, Dr. Metzinger will completely reposition it for a more youthful look. Since the technique is more extensive, this procedure requires a longer healing time.

  • Mini: This procedure can correct mild to moderate wrinkling and drooping with small incisions and a relatively short recovery time, which is why it is often called “the weekend facelift.” Dr. Metzinger will use small incisions or even endoscopic tools (computer-controlled viewing devices and tiny instruments) to subtly modify your tissue and remove excess skin.

Dr. Metzinger customizes his surgical techniques to each patient’s needs. He will consult with you to decide which type of facelift is best to achieve your cosmetic goals.

Additional Treatments

For beautiful results, Dr. Metzinger uses suspension (surgical muscle tightening), resurfacing, and volume restoration. Combining these procedures can give your face a full, firm, natural appearance. To add volume to your skin, he can perform fat grafting, in which he collects excess fats from other parts of your body (thighs, waist, buttocks, upper arm), purifies them, and injects them into your face for a plump, youthful look. Dr. Metzinger offers a variety of treatments to enhance the superficial appearance and texture of your facial skin:

  • Laser resurfacing uses precise, powerful beams of laser light to smooth your skin, reducing wrinkles, spots, scars, pores, or lines.

  • Dermabrasion works similarly to laser abrasion, removing the top layers of dead or damaged skin, but it does so with an exfoliating, vibrating brush tool.

  • Chemical peels are carefully formulated solutions of varying intensities that Dr. Metzinger can apply to your skin to slough off damaged or pigmented cells to reveal healthy, fresh skin underneath. These formulas also often include nutrients that help moisturize your skin.
